Venetian Pool Coral Gables: The Mediterranean in Miami

Good to Know
September 04, 2017

In 1924 the Venetian Pool Coral Gables opens, following the Mediterranean inspiration with which George Merrick conceived the beautiful city of Coral Gables in Miami, this haven of tranquility enchants all who visit it and stands out as the most beautiful and imposing in U.S.

Giant palm trees surround this famous public swimming pool in Miami. It is carved in a quarry of coral rock, which uses more than 3  million liters of water from an underground aquifer for its operation.

Its European architecture, unobstructed view of buildings and tropical landscaping, are intertwined with coral stones, caves and small,  weather-eroded hideaways, as well as impressive waterfalls, which erase all traces of busy Miami and represents an oasis you will not  want to leave.

Venetian Pool Coral Gables Keeps Its Fame

For George Merrick it was important to maintain his vision of Coral Gables, a city completely planned and in which he wanted to highlight those Mediterranean characteristics that have made it unique.

Part of his motivation was also to provide the people of the rising city with quality, well-being and meeting opportunities, so that these relationships flourished and brought others to know, do business, or move to Coral Gables.

So the monumental swimming pool, then known as "Venetian Casino", became the meeting place for the 1920’s Miamians. In fact, it was a favorite destination of many celebrities and different Hollywood stars who were fascinated by its unmatched beauty.

In addition to using it for synchronized swimming exhibits, it was eventually emptied in its entirety to become the stage for musical concerts. In 2001, a show was celebrated to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Coral Gables.

Preserving for the new generations

This structure has had two major reforms, one in 1989 and the second between 2009 and 2010, with which its historical characteristics persisted and continue to stand out over the years. The idea is to maintain its legacy for the new generations as a monument that preserves the memory of Coral Gables and its people.

Upon entering, visitors may find that the facilities maintain intact their structure and rich history. In conclusion, after the effort of its creator and the group that accompanied him in this adventure, the pool is a paradise and the only one today included in the National Register of Historic Places.
